We could open it up to more attempts...say...no limit to lifts (instead of 3).
Also, maybe 25lb increments on the flintstone deadlift - after we have added the stones, (Instead of 50)
Thoughts?

Been some questions on the Deadlift. I think we will have lots of time (only two events on Friday night, and not that many competitors).

Lift until you can't, lifter chooses his starting weight and has one minute to complete the lift. You (Brent)would have to set the increments, kind of like
old shcool WSM when they used to do the squat and one person would get on the platform for the next increment. I'm not a fan of the 3 lift rule myself.

I agree, as many attempts as you want would be better.

I am having some problems getting sponsors, so wanted to update everyone so there are no surprises.
We would like to pay out: (750, 600, 450, 300, 150). At this point we will for sure pay (600, 450, 300, 150) and are still working on some things to raise the original amounts. There will be a trophy for 1st as shown below (plus the engraving). Looks like our local IGA will be providing drinks and some fruit items for Saturday. Still, always wise to bring your own stuff in case supplies run out. Here is the trophy for 1st place. He can just stand under the 18" bar.

Truck pull is doable. It's harder then alot of semi pulls i have done. I would be able to finish it. Maybe be some that cannot, but not many.
We also weighed the flintstones. 320lbs each. So..with the bar its 685. So..we will go 550-600-650 with the bar and plates. Then add stones for 685-700-725-750-775-800-825-850 etc... You can lift each weight. But miss and you are out. 60 seconds time limit to make lift. Also..i want guys ready to lift when it's their turn. There will be a time limit to get up there and pull. |

Change to payouts!!!!!! This is final. 625-475-325-175-50
Was harder to get sponsors this year, partially cause it not being at the festival, and also just the general economy. Hope this does not mess anyone up. |

It sucks to see so many guys out. Injury has been crushing athletes left and right. In 2000 and 2001 there were 13 and 15 competitors respectively. Has
strongman dropped off or have the weights gotten so extreme that it's chasing away newcomers?
I love this sport but am saddened to read of possibly only 8 copmpetitors at this year's Western's. Dennis

In hind sight, doing a 105/westerns would have been nice. Or..letting the promoter compete..or maybe letting Americans in.
None the less, everything else is looking good for the comp. Weather looks really good..not too hot. Will start moving all the stuff to town tomorrow. If anyone has music they would like played when they walk out etc, please post or email me. Brad P. are you coming out to the comp? |

have the weights gotten so extreme that it's chasing away newcomers? Not at the Westerns this year, as the event weights are scaled. |

Dennis Ruygrok wrote: I agree... and I think its both the weights and the injuries. We are having a hell of a time to get the new guys out to compete here in SK... there are a few guys training but none of them want to throw their hat in the ring becuase things are heavier than they can completely handle. Oh, and there were 13 competitors in 2007 as well. But hell, there were only 6 guys last year.

It has been a bad year of injuries!!
Brent, no one said you couldn't compete. You are the promoter!! I think the point was just made that it can be seen as a conflict of interest. I would say that you should do it.

Yes..alot of injuries....that sucks.
So...just did some results checking... Westerns the last few years... 2009-MB-7? 2008-BC-7 2007-SK-12 2006-SK-9 2005-AB-18 2004-MB-9 2003-SK-15 AB with 18. Wow. Wish we could back to that. I think they had alot of first timers there? Not sure. But that is fine. Just need some bodies out there. (In my opinion) |

We are running into the same problem here, our numbers were very low in the last 2 years, 8 last year and 7 this year. there was a time when we had to hold
qualifiers to lower the numbers. I think that there are very fiew athletes today that can be competitive with the weights that are being used. For example
farmers walk in 2005 atlantics were 250lbs this year they were 350lbs.
I think that it is not looking good for the future, but saying that, the CSM is heavy so the people going need to be able to lift the weights. We are thinking of running 2 shows in one next year, heavy equiptment and light, It will be very confuseing for the crowed but We think it ight increase our numbers. Has anyone else tried this before? |
