Grant, I feel you on this one. This sport is its own worst enemy when it comes to bringing in new blood. You need a heavy contest so the right guys move
higher but most athletes without great PL numbers and years of experience are scared off. Most vets in the west remember the dauphin competition. You'd
have 20+ guys showing up. But the weights were much lighter.
I think Als competiton was a great mix of events, and the strongest guy won without nearly killing himself in the process.
The economy also has something to do with it. It costs alot of $$$ to travel and prize money isn't what it used to be. I made $22-2300 in edmonton in
2004. Guys in 5th were getting $400 (I think). Where are guys in this part of the country going to make that now? Its not about getting rich, (with a win)
but should be about breaking even. This is not a dig at promoters, (I couldn't do any better), just a fact of our current climate.

Don't get me wrong, though, I'm a purist. I would rather have contests with no prize money than no show at all.
