Grant, I feel you on this one. This sport is its own worst enemy when it comes to bringing in new blood. You need a heavy contest so the right guys move
higher but most athletes without great PL numbers and years of experience are scared off. Most vets in the west remember the dauphin competition. You'd
have 20+ guys showing up. But the weights were much lighter.
I think Als competiton was a great mix of events, and the strongest guy won without nearly killing himself in the process.
The economy also has something to do with it. It costs alot of $$$ to travel and prize money isn't what it used to be. I made $22-2300 in edmonton in
2004. Guys in 5th were getting $400 (I think). Where are guys in this part of the country going to make that now? Its not about getting rich, (with a win)
but should be about breaking even. This is not a dig at promoters, (I couldn't do any better), just a fact of our current climate.

Don't get me wrong, though, I'm a purist. I would rather have contests with no prize money than no show at all.

Maybe should not have started this in the westerns thread...but..
We had a nice little comp at the farm this year..light weight, no real prize money, and had a bunch of guys. Amount of effort to put that on vs the westerns is tiny. What ever, the westerns will be a good show..and we will send the best we have to CSM. Now..Brad...hmmm....we need to talk about mic skills! |

Light shows are a good idea to spark interest for begginers. We all started with sub 300lb farmers walk, it is ridiculous for a new strongman expecting to come
in at that level. It takes time, hard work and experience to become a good strongman. The first time I did a heavy competition I did terrible, it took some
time to gain the strength and confidence to compete at the next level. We must promote the sport by holding more local events to get new blood interested and
hopefully a few of those competitors will have the devotion to get to the high level we see today. There is no quick fix it will take time to bring up new
talent.

I think a lot of new guys to the sport are really afraid of going out and not being able to complete an event or do well. It's strange... the first
competition I did I placed 13th and just jumped in with both feet. You don't get better unless you learn from others, your own mistakes, and heck - a
competition is a great place to learn new tricks and get tips from guys that have more experience and are probably stronger. The mindset now though is that
guys don't want to compete unless they can place well and/or finish events etc. At least from what I'm seeing here in SK that's the case. We've
got a few strong guys that have started training a year or two ago and still haven't competed...

lots of action in the last week.. injuries withdrawls.. etc anyone got predictions. darkhorses.. people to watch out for... i got my predictions.. which i will give just before the show.. but the top three include a newbie who will open some eyes.. a former western champ.. and a returning vet who hasn't done this show in years.. good luck to all... i will break down my top three in each event in a few days... I think it will be a very tough and close contest but here is what I think:
1) Scott Cummine - His training has been going good and he wants the title back. 2) Moe Paquette - Looking really strong. 3) Tyler Hildebrand - I think John will be fighting tooth and nail for this spot. I've never seen John compete so because of that Tyler gets my third spot. Those are my predictions... Remember I picked the Leafs to win the Stanley Cup last year. |

Just so everyone know..looks like we have a photographer on site. Will instruct them to get at least one pic of everyone in each of the events.

brents predictions.. Event 1 Max 18" Deadlift 875 lbs right on the money here.. Event 2 Atlas Stones Someone will get the 420 420 ?? not sure but you will see at least 1 sub 22 second run thru 4.. Event 3 Farmers Walk 325 in 43.25 seconds not sure of the handles.. but if it's 80 and 80 .. more like 28 - 29sec will be the number... Event 4 300lb Log press 6 reps - i think that's about right.. Event 5 Wheel barrow 52.45' - no idea here.. to many variables Event 6 Harness Pull 38 seconds - same again .. too hard to determine.. Event 7 Medley 44 seconds - i think this is low.. by the end of the day a bit of heat.. i will be suprised to see a sub 60 time.. more to come.. J |

My predictions:
Deadlift - 925 Atlas Stones - 420 will go up. Farmer's - 325 in just under 60 seconds. Log - 300 for 3 reps. Samson's Barrow - 50 seconds or so. Harness Pull - 30 seconds. Medley - Well under a minute.

2009 westerns predictions
Deadlift - 875 will win it big mo will hit the big number John M will hit be right behind and scott will also be in the hunt Atlas Stones - 420 will go up. if it does - it will be moe and/or jonny boy if not John M will be the fastest thru 4 scott and tyler will also get to the last stone. Farmer's - 325 in just under 60 seconds. just under 60 by about 30 seconds if it's 80 down and 80 back - sub 30 will be the number John will make people check thier watches scott will post a good time and eric the grip monster will get on the board.. Log - 300 for 3 reps. .. i think scott will crank out 8 big moe will be right behind with 6 and tyler will get 3 to stay in the hunt Samson's Barrow - 50 seconds or so. tough to say - eric has done well on this before - has to be the favourite john has massive grip and good foot speed scoot and moe are so strong in the hips and lower back Harness Pull - 30 seconds. got to like the big guys moe will grind this out tyler should be in the hunt and john will pull good and keep his eye on the prize.. Medley - Well under a minute. size grip and conditioning.. john M - again a watch checker scott will fly thru the course and 3rd will be who wants it more and needs it more... moe or tyler my predictions 4th and just on the outside - big ty 3rd and goin to CSM - Big Moe 2nd man this will be super close... but Jonny M western champ - Scott C but i wouldn't be suprised if the top 3 were in a different order..
