How would, Westerns in Altona, 2009 sound? Saturday July 4th as possible date. (lots of time to get ready for Canadians) Payout would be $750, $600, $450, $300, $150 6 Events... $25 MASA Membership Fee (for non-members) + $25 Entry Fee Free Hotel night for competitor traveling the furthest. Transportation would be provided from Winnipeg airport to Altona as best we can arrange it around flights (meaning..hopefully you guys arrive and leave at the same time!!) its a 1.5 hour drive..less if you fit in my car. Our goal would be to get 12+ competitors Events yet to be decided. I would probably want to make the events progressive or choice in nature... eg 240 log for reps or 280 log for reps... eg atlas stones...250-420 etc... Also...have some stuff i am working on that would make it possible to go head to head on more events.....depending on what events are chosen that is.

The only thing you need to keep in mind is to keep this thing bloody heavy. Log - 280/reps, stones definitely over 400, pulling (reps 700) or just a max, farmer's, 325-340/hand....stuff like that. As for Alton, it's a good place to hold the comp and I've never heard any negative comments form the athletes that have competed there before. Dennis Tough times don't last....tough people do!!!!

See what he thinks as far as events/weights for CSM 2009, and what would make sense here. Then of course some feedback from you guys.

I agree with Dennis about ti being pretty heavy.. simply as a tool to keep those that don't belong there away...again I have made my feelings known about progressive weights for the Westerns.... for example if the log is 240 or 280 for reps...I realize this is just proposed but.. this 280 log is at best the opening log of a medley at csm.. no point in having anyone that can't hit the 280 at westerns,,... same with the DL.. 2 - 3 yrs ago it was 500 for reps or 600 for reps.. again if you can't hit 600 .. no point in being at westerns.. maybe you could run two divisions ...a novice and an open.. the open division athletes contending for the CSM berths.... then you could have two weights... novice class does the lighter weights.. this would be easy to run logistically and would probably generate more ocmpetitors... J

I sure hope there is a Max DL at this year's Westerns and a 280lb log for reps is about right as most LW platinum Plus comps in the US have a 270-280 log for reps.

If this is going to go ahead can we make the date official as soon as possible?

This really subjects them to potential cries of favoritism. I think the method that MATT used for the 105 KG nats in 2008 was good and fair.. he presented a list of 20 events ( based on available equipment) to 4 officials : in this case himself, NAS president Dione Wessels, Grant Buhr and Grant Connors... each person then picked their favourite 10 the list was streamlined to 10 based on the choices - then the panel was asked to rank teh remaining 10 events 1 thru 10 and the top 6 "vote getting" events were chosen.. this is something to be considered and I will gladly offer my help for it ... cheers J

A few suggestions if it were to happen: 1) A rep from each Western province ( Preferably not competing in Westerns ) 2) A list of events the promotor could and is willing to run. ( Example: Brent has fingal fingers but I know it is a LOT of work to move them and he may not want to do that )

So, should the events at Western's not at least be similar to the events at CSM?? However, we all know that CSM events are NOT selected to be simliar to WSM in which the top CSM guy(s) get an invite potentially. It's a catch 22, does Western's show a good well rounded competition to find the top Western strongman that way or do they slant thing towards obtaining a person that will possibly excel and show well at CSM because of some strengths/weaknesses that may be exploited? Hard decision......but something to consider in my opinion. Stu

Stu has a point of having events similar to CSM. Canadians is always grip heavy, has stones to 55 inches or higher, always has a squat and deadlift and since it will be in the same location will most likely have a arm over arm again. It makes sense to have westerns similar to this if the equipment is available.

Posts: 118 (01/09/09 00:02:05) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	If you want it to mimic CSM 2009 here is an educated guess on the events Atlas Stones- Same run as last yr (possibly back to 56in rings but don't bet the farm on it) Viking Press- New pc of equipment from last yr I bet they use it again for the press Truck DL- Same Reason of Viking Press plus with title sponsor likely to be Chevy again Trucks must be used on events Power Stairs- Quebec loves them/easy to film/easy to get sponsor's logo on them Farmer's Medley-Probably similar to 2008/ last implements will be the same Train Wheels/ Truck push medley- Tried out at North Americans 2008, crowd loved it, lots of action and involves a truck Final Medley - Could be the same or similar to 2008, Tire(1000) and Yoke(800) will be involved other parts could be log again or chain drag or how about a sled drag with Harley Davidsons? I believe Hugo has a sposorship deal with HD in Quebec. Not sure on the last event- could be a harness or arm over arm truck pull, fingers might be back or wheel barrow makes a return? These are just educated guesses, I don't have an early line on the event line-up but I bet I'm pretty close when it comes out.

Answer: Grow Stronger!

I went over it a bit with Grant Buhr and we made some changes. I am going to call Hugo, either tonight or early next week to go over, and see if there are any changes he recommends.
